☆ Plot - - -

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly? To turn invisible? To instantly master that skill you've been struggling to master for so long? Or perhaps to have that one important memento again that you lost so long ago. A silly desire, perhaps even impossible, but so very common.

Come midnight, the characters will notice the by now very familiar sensation of their marks glowing and... well, it certainly doesn't look like anything changed at first glance. Life seems to go on as normal until your character attempts to do that one thing they've so often wished to do and realizes they can. Perhaps they go to the bathroom come Monday morning and find that one long lost treasure. They might be daydreaming about the ability to fly before even realizing they are already hovering!

But for everything gained, something should be lost. Hopefully it is worth it.

To sum it up, what will happen to your character this week is that they will gain one thing while losing another. We're taking a broad approach at losses and gains, so let your imagination run wild! They can lose (and gain!) anything from knowledge, a skill, an item, or even a particular sense or emotion.

Now, in terms of exactly what can be gained or lost: of course losses are something they need to currently possess, that one is easy. As for gains, we allow characters to gain things from their canon (such as an item long lost to them or a skill they have perhaps been trying to master), gain general things (skills such as learning to fly or being able to turn invisible that are seen across many stories and are not tied to any story in particular) or even gain cross canon skills. However they will only be able to gain these kind of things if they have a reasonable amount of cross canon CR with the character of said canon.

What we mean by this is that, for example, if your character has plenty of interaction with the Soul Eater cast, they could gain the ability to read souls. However if your character has never before interacted with these people, they won't be able to. We'll leave it up to you exactly what constitutes a reasonable amount of CR, but the rough rule of thumb is if they've only had one conversation and maybe know the other character's name, it's a no go, while if the characters have had a few conversations and have formed an impression of each other beyond 'dude I met once' it is generally fine. Mind you, the impression they have of the other character does not need to be positive, just as long as it is more than just 'I have seen this face before. Maybe.'

You are allowed to take this curse as serious or as silly as you want. Meaning if you just want to joke around, maybe you character gains the ability to fly, but loses the ability to speak in anything other than rhyme. Whereas if you want to take a more serious approach, your character might gain this one skill they have been trying their whole life to master, while losing another very important skill to them. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that each loss and gain should be roughly equal in importance (meaning, if they are gaining something very important to them, they should also be losing something very important to them) and tone (no losing something silly and gaining something serious). Of course, what is silly and serious depends a lot on the character in question. While losing the ability to sing might not be very important to one character, it could mean the world to a character whose biggest dream is to become a rock star. If you aren't sure if something is serious enough, you can always poke us and we'll help you take a look at things.

Now, on the whole, one consequence of the curse should be positive and one should be negative. We are totally okay with your character's loss being the positive thing for them (perhaps they have certain memories they hate and would like to lose, or a monster form that troubles them) but in that case what they gain should be a negative thing. (for example, they lose their monster form but gain a new fear or a different monster form.)

A few things to clarify:
o Each character will only gain and lose one thing and this will remain the same for the entire week.

o All gains and losses will become active the moment the curse hits, though, of course, depending on what type of thing they have lost/gained, it might not be instantly obvious.

o Gains and losses don't need to be similar in nature; that is to say if your character gains a skill, they don't automatically need to lose another skill. You can mix and match that any way you want.

o Keep in mind this is not a canon swap curse. Even if your character is gaining skills from another canon they will still largely be themselves. Again, if you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please contact us.

o Lastly, characters will not be able to 'regain' what they have lost throughout the week. Meaning if your character has lost certain memories, someone else could certainly tell them about it! However, the moment the conversation is over, their memories will disappear again. They will remember having had the conversation and talking about X subject, they just won't be able to remember the exact details of said subject. The same goes for any skills or items lost. Another character might try to reteach them said skill, but it will not work. Similarly, if an item was lost, characters may try to recreate it, but in the end that item will always disappear again mysteriously. Take your eyes off it for two seconds and poof, it's gone.

As always, this curse is entirely optional. A curse tag has been created for it under !curse: 42 - a gain and a loss.

( As always, if there are any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to post below or contact Dees, Pan, Mandie or Ten! )
